In case you’re unclear what exactly the title Laggies means, even with knowing the backstory, you’re not alone. “I didn’t think we could call it that because nobody knows what a “laggie” is,” Shelton recalls. “And then Andrea was like—you don’t know what a laggie is?” The word turned out to be something the screenwriter had coined with her high school friends for those who were always late or lagging behind, but even with its very particular heritage, the unique title eventually grew on the director. “Every name that we came up with was just lacking, it just felt so generic,” she said. “As the years go on and more movies are made, I feel like titles start to be recycled. So then I realized, nobody is ever going to name their movie Laggies. This will be the only movie.”
