1998年に雑誌掲載されたTom Junodによる記事から着想を得て、Mr. Rogersと記者との交流を描いた作品。
鑑賞後に当記事を読みました。密着取材と呼べるのか、事細かい観察からRogersの高徳ぶりが伺えます。一方、本作はニヒルな記者Lloyd VogelがRogersを取材する中、抑え込んできた負の感情と向き合い、良好な家族関係を構築していく過程が主題となっていました。鍵は辛抱強さでしょう。子供心を知り尽くしているRogersにとって、「かつて子供だった」人の心を開くのはそう難しくないようでした。子供時代のトラウマを抱えたまま親になった主人公を通して、観客もRogersのセラピーにより癒されていくような感覚に包まれます。
Ancestry.comによると、Tom HanksとRogersは実際に遠縁だそうです。本作でも変わらず好演を披露しているHanksですが、本物はそんな険しい目つきをしないだろうという、演技でも隠しきれない人相が少し気になりました。
邦題が適切なのか微妙ですが、Mr. Rogersの言葉はどれも素晴らしいです。良質な子供番組は大人の心も洗うようでした。

題材の記事は、5:30に起床し、毎日ほぼ同じルーティンをこなして21:30に就寝する、規則正しいRogersを表現するかのように、言葉の反復が目立ちます。
記者については、Old Rabbitと名付けたぬいぐるみと、父親が風変わりで大酒飲みの遊び人であること以外、ほぼ全て脚色と知りました。Junod自身は父親と仲が良く、Rogersには養女を迎えるにあたって背中を押してもらったと。
地下鉄の車両内で、Rogersを見た下校途中の子供達が歌い始めたというのは事実。
劇中の名台詞は、様々な場面でRogersが語った言葉がもとになっています。玩具の剣を振り回すのが好きな子は、自分の強さをアピールしたいので、君は内面も強い子なんだよと伝えてあげると良いと話しています。
King Friday XIIIという名には、迷信を怖がる必要はないというメッセージを込めたとのこと。ちなみにJerryの住所は2821→2+8+2+1=13でした。
Mr. Rogersの”Neighborhood”で途中退職した人はいないのだそう。
Childhoodとsilenceを奪い、代わりにprofanityとviolence を植え付けるメディアの世界で、品行方正な戦いを続けた稀有な人物の、他の格言は記事より引用。
"You were a child once, too."
体重143 poundsを維持していることについて。
“….. ’the number 143 means 'I love you.' It takes one letter to say 'I' and four letters to say 'love' and three letters to say 'you.' One hundred and forty-three. 'I love you.' Isn't that wonderful?’”
