ディズニーの「作曲家」といえば、Alan Menkenを思い浮かべる人が多いだろう。では、「作詞家」は？本作は、『アラジン』『美女と野獣』『リトル・マーメイド』の作詞を担当し、Alan Menkenと共に数々の名曲を生み出してきたHoward Ashmanのドキュメンタリー映画である。

楽曲制作の秘話や実際のレコーディングの映像など、ディズニー作品好きにはたまらない裏話が詰め込まれていて、さらに作詞家のHowardについて理解を深めることができる。本作を見るまで彼のことを全く詳しく知らなかったので、見て本当に良かったと思った。”Part of Your World”や”Mob Song(夜襲の歌)”など、今後これらの楽曲を聴くたびに、わたしはHowardの語った言葉を思い出すことだろう。
エンドクレジットでHowardが歌う”Part of Your World”がとてもとても素敵で美しくて、最後の最後まで泣いてしまった。
そして『Beauty and the Beast』のレコーディングが素晴らしすぎて....ポッド夫人の声の方がまさにこの役をやるために生まれてきたの？ってくらいに適役で素敵で、歌ってる間のしぐさとかもうポット婦人そのもの！！感極まりまくった。

▼”Part of Your World”は『Little Mermaid』に絶対に必要だと訴えたのがHowardだった！
“Part of Your World”は当初、「バラードだと子供が飽きてしまうから」等といった理由でカットされようとしていたが、Howardがそれを全力で止めたエピソードが残っている。
今となっては『Little Mermaid』に”Part of Your World”がないなんて考えられない...！
▼Howardの歌詞には、政治的になりすぎず、しかし物語を超えた社会へのメッセージも込められていた。
•”Mob Song”は、当時「同性愛者」を「AIDSの根源」で「悪」とでっち上げ、彼らを徹底的に排除しようとする人々を揶揄している。
•『Aladdin』の”Humiliate the Boy”は、Aladdinの持つものをJafarがひとつひとつ奪い去り、Aladdinが全てを失ってしまう様が歌われているが、その裏には、指の感覚、声、視覚など、AIDSという疾患によりひとつひとつ大切なものが奪われていくHoward自身の姿が浮かび上がる。

•I didn’t wanna tell you because I didn’t know how Disney would react. Here I am, a gay man, and I’m working on this movie for kids, and I didn’t wanna be fired. ーHoward
•Howard was suffering these neuropathies and he’d lose the sensation in his fingers or he’d lose his voice. He’d lose part of his eyesight, he’d…..Things would just go. And he had Jafar singing this song called “Humiliate the Boy” and it’s a gleeful…And one by one, we’re taking everything away from Aladdin, stripping him down to nothing. And all of us, I think, recognized that there was a pretty strong subtext to this.
•The “Mob Song” is a perfect manifestation of people seeking a scapegoat for their troubles and identifying a villain and wanting to exterminate it.
•He (Howard) could put himself in the other person’s place. It’s not that he really wanted to be a mermaid who got legs (haha). But he put himself in Ariel’s position, in Ariel’s life. That’s empathy.
