This movie reminds me multiple movies, such as Tokyo Story, Grave of the fireflies, The spirit of Beehive, and Shoplifters. In those movies and Pather Panchali, not too much events happens like Hollywood movies do, but characters’s life goes on in the film. Directors take a moment and shoot shots to depict the realism, such as shots of environment, characters' close up faces, and use a lot of establish shots.
Notable shots which caught my eyes were Apu’s reaction shots, gazing what was happening in every scenes. When Durga was hit by mother after the suspicion of thief, when auntie passed away on the street, everytime he didn’t show his reaction or emotion as much as older sister Durga does, but gaze and observe the life as it is as a young brother. He is still young, and learning about world as it is. We, as a spectator, observe their realism through Apu’s eyes. The heart breaking scene was at the end of the movie, when Apu was glooming and taking care of himself all by himself, which reflects the scene when everything was taken care by sister Durga at the beginning of the film. That sequence emphasizes his lost of older sister, closest friend, role model, and closest pal towards the world.
This film also depicts female’s roles well. The story and characters reminded me the painting of Gustav Klimt, The Three Ages of Woman. Durga, Sarbajaya, and Auntie shows each roles of women by their ages. Durga is treated differently from Apu by parents when it comes to education and house works. Sarbajaya is worn out by poverty, houseworks, neighbors, and the care of children and auntie, waiting her optimistic husband. Auntie is exception, her case is more focused on her oldness, but still have couples of sad moments of being excluded and against as spin in the butt by tired and irritated Sarbajaya. But Sarbajaya is not evil person, which is obvious though her act toward children. This script neighbor told her before she leave the town described the reason well. “ Rotten away in one place year after year does no one any good. It makes people petty and mean. That’s what it’s done to me.” As a neo-realism film, this kind of crush and uneasy feeling was brought towards characters. Like The bicycle thief, the structure of society or something beyond their effort harsh them.
