Man does the mediocrity continue...

So Universal is really trying to push this Dark Universe series into motion. And The Mummy is the first movie within that series. However, this movie in spite of its ambition has a really hard time differentiating itself from other blockbuster movies.

With all the money and talent they had behind this movie, it still manages to be a dud. Tom Cruise is certainly a guy that can carry on a movie like this, but he still plays typical Tom Cruise. I don't see the character, I just see Tom Cruise.

His semi-romance with Annabelle Wallis was cringing and their dialogue was terrible. It just felt like a typical movie romance that wouldn't really work in real life.

Jake Johnson who I loved in New Girl was another stereotypical comedic sidekick that wasn't really funny, but more annoying.

Sofia Boutella who played the Mummy character was fine too. She was intimidating for sure, but nowhere near as charismatic as Arnold Vosloo's Imhotep in the 1999 version.

The action scene were good. The opening sequence in Iraq was pretty impressive. However, everything after that became a generic CG heavy mess where it became yet ANOTHER game of "How many cities can we destroy, and end the world."

The best way to describe this movie is it's typical in every single way. It's not new or groundbreaking. It's just passable. But Universal really needs to step up their game if they want to succeed in this Dark Universe project.
