Director James Gray has made such a great classical tale of discovery and struggle, that it saddens me to know that not a lot of movies like this are made nowadays.
Charlie Hunnam gives the best performance I've ever seen from him. Including his 7 seasons of Sons of Anarchy. His character of Percy Fawcett is so well portrayed though each expedition that he goes through. The struggle, the misery, his deep obsession with the jungle that he grows with each expedition, all of these emotions are so well realized. He really has become a talent to look out for.
Robert Pattinson also, gives a great subtle performance too. He's come so far from his Twilight days.
Sienna Miller as Percy's wife was also someone that had to struggle. With her husband leaving constantly, and having to raise the children on her own, her frustration and wanting to believe her husband collides constantly.
Tom Holland isn't much in this movie, but his character also contributes to Percy's belief, and gave a great performance too.
Everything in this movie felt authentic. You can feel the grit and the humidity of the jungle. It was rough to watch them go through such hardships, and their courage and discipline was so well realized.
In spite of the 2hr 30min. run time, I was never bored once. Because the movie takes its time developing the characters, and the consequences that come with each decision they make.
This is some good ol' fashion film making. I'm so excited to see this movie when it hits theaters. It was truly magnificent to see a movie like this exist today.
