Borrowing only few elements from the original, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle serves more as a spiritual sequel as opposed to a definitive successor to all 90s kids’s quintessential VHS collection. Fueled with nostalgia, throwbacks and infectious presence of the Rock and Jack Black; Welcome to the Jungle evolved from a movie about one-dimensional teen caricature to a well-acted and humorously meta-driven comedy-adventure that surprisingly understands video games a lot more than films based on video games.
High-octane and consistently self-aware, though it may not leave much of a cultural impact, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle gave the ol’ board game a patch update it desperately needs.
