第3話、聖書の外典についての会話が興味深い。
少し長いけど引用してみる。

グレイス「この絵は？」
ナンシー「“スザンナと長老たち” 聖書の絵よ」 It’s Susannah and the Elders, which is a Bible subject.
グレイス「全部読んだけどこんな話ない」 I know my Bible backwards and forwards and this is not in it.
ナンシー「あるわ」
グレイス「ない」
グレイス「これが聖書の絵なのか知りたくて」
主人「厳密に言えば違う。外典の絵だ」 No. No. Strictly speaking it is not. The story is in the apocrypha.
グレイス「外典とは？」
主人「外典とは、聖書に入れないと決めた話を集めた本だ」 The Apocrypha is a book where they put all the stories from biblical times they decided should not go in the Bible.
グレイス「誰の決定です？ 聖書は神が書かれたと思っていました」 Who decided? I thought the Bible was written by God. It’s called “the word of God” and everyone terms it so.
主人「書いたのは神だが記録したのは人間だ。彼らは神の啓示を受けた。つまり神と話をしたんだ」 Perhaps God wrote it, but men wrote it down, which is a little different. But those men were said to have been inspired by God, which means He spoke to them, told them what to do.
グレイス「声を聞いたと？」 Did they hear voices?
主人「そうだ」
主人「“スザンナ”の物語を？」
グレイス「いいえ」
主人「彼女は若い男との姦通罪を長老たちにでっち上げられた(falesly accused)。寝るのを拒否したからだ。だが石打ちの刑の寸前 法律家が現れ、矛盾する証言を引き出し(inducing them to give contradictory evidence)長老のウソを暴いた。この話の教えは？」
グレイス「庭で水浴びしないこと」
主人「利口な法律家を見つけることだ」

マーガレット・アトウッドの原作にもあるのだろうか。
