I struggled to like this film primarily because it was in Japanese (the translation felt off at times, even though I don’t speak French by any means) and because of the rampant misogyny shown. I do give credit to this film pioneering the use of jump cuts and the themes of “nihilism” shown in the two characters, but I simply couldn’t get myself to like the two characters, and felt the Japanese translation of the last quote to be a bit unsatisfactory. The abruptness of the jump cuts made me thinking more about the jump cuts themselves and detracted me from focusing on the film. I may need to revisit this.
