This tale of Maurice features people contested by the rigidity of social class and traditional rules. I loved the characters in this film, serving to showing the different backgrounds and dynamics of gay people at the time and also what happens when they break free from, or conform to the set ways of Edwardian England.
With its bildungsroman-like undertones, I appreciate the author/filmmaker's attitude to this film during the 80s, with its happy ending and positive portrayal of the characters. All of this played out against beautiful period-themed settings that I admired, especially the shots at Cambridge in the first part of the film, and the beautiful Edwardian clothing which is to die for.
It is a new comfort film of mine!
