This movie scared me very much, and I thought about it for many months after my first viewing. Kon is a very skilful director, not only were the scenes animated very well for 1997, in particular the chase scenes, but in placing the audience in Mima's shoes, making us just as lost as she was, allowing us to empathise. The pacing and the plot was also well executed. I really like the blend of reality, imagination, illusion and dreams, and it frightens me to think that lives of pop idols may not be that different to Mima's.
It was also good to see the anime medium in a new light, it is a stark stylistic contrast to Ghibli films.
