A coming of age film that made me reflect for a while on my own childhood and the moments that began to distinguish myself as more of an adult. River Phoenix truly had a standout performance and all four of the cast had a level of maturity that was both impressive in their ability to convey not just a sense believable camaraderie but also an understanding of the deeper meanings and grapplings with death, vulnerability and friendship. The final reflection at the end comes at an appropriate time in my life as I reflect on friendships of the past and those that I am fortunate enough to have now. I think for everyone as well, the scene with River Phoenix’s character vanishing at the road carries a deeper, somber significance to his legacy as an actor now years after his passing.
