From discrimination to environmental awareness to condemnation of capitalism, Downsizing boasts an array of topical commentary, yet ultimately resulting in the lack of coherent focus nor a central thematic core. Despite having the resolution to explore these relevant ideas through an extremely unique concept, Downsizing is an example of a tremendously confused film; a film that attempted to do many things, yet due its poor execution ended up being not-enough at everything. With a lot of characters, themes and plot points being subverted—even forgotten—as the film progresses, Downsizing never quite goes where you think its going. It is unfortunate, or perhaps more accurately it is frustrating. To witness an incredibly peculiar idea and an ensemble of exceptional talents such as Matt Damon and Christoph Waltz were not empowered enough to convey their fullest potential.
