Based on the Broadway play, directed by and starring Denzel Washington.
This is about a father in the 1950s trying to raise his family. We get to see the struggle that Denzel's Troy Maxson has to go through in order to support his family.
This movie mainly takes place in one location. In and out of the Maxsons' house. Great exchange of dialogue and conflict between the family ensues in this one location.
I can't start this without mentioning how great Denzel is in this movie. He plays such a complex character. He has a way of being likable and frightening at the same time. He is a man that is so self-entitled that his ego really gets in the way of not just himself, but the people around him.
His masked envy for his som really drives the family apart.
Viola Davis brings such an authentic performance. Her relationship with Troy felt real. Her bickering and fighting sold me that these were married people for so long.
Other people who come in and out are also great too. Mykelti Williamson....what a character actor he is!!
All of the performances are good. The story was interesting enough. The dialogue was sometimes a little to stage-like to where it didn't feel like the characters were having a conversation at times.
The performances really sell here. However, despite Denzel being amazing, I didn't like the egotistical nature of his character. Honestly it annoyed me at times. Which is why I couldn't fully enjoy this movie.
But if your curious, go check this out! It's worth your time.
