We can grow up even after we have become an adult.
Ben(Viggo Mortensen) and his six children lives in the Washington wilderness. They learn how to survive in nature and philosophy of Noam Chomsky, and read various kinds of books so that they have abilities on an athlete level and can speak six languages. One day, their mother, Leslie hospitalized for bipolar disorder, commits suicide. So, Ben leads his children on a road trip into life outside the wilderness.
The road trip makes Ben realize that his educational policy is wrong, and he decides to leave his children with his father-in-law. But they choose to follow and help their father to cremate their mother as she wished during her lifetime. The scene in which they see her off as singing is really impressive.
I don't know whether Ben's educational policy is right or wrong. Surely, his children are physically strong and academically intelligent compared with children of the same generation. However, how about their sociability? His 18-year-old son, Bo doesn't know how to correctly treat girls. Other children also behave themselves insolently or say rude things toward their cousins and strangers unconsciously.
In the end, children have had doubts about their father's way and wide views. Not only them but Ben also have changed his mind and switched his stubborn educational policy to flexible one. Thus, regardless of our age, we can realize and change something, additionally, we can still grow up until the end of our life.
