‘A Silent Voice (聲の形)’ is a Japanese animated film which was released in 2016 in Japan and follows a deaf elementary school girl who was just transferred to a new school, where she is bullied by a boy just because of her disability with some friends of his. A few years later, the boy,who is now a high school student finds himself completely isolated, having no friends due to his bullying in the past which caused friends to cringe away from him, goes to meet the deaf girl to apologise for his bad treatment after learning a bit of sign language to communicate with her with no note pads. However, things go as he does not expect after reuniting with some of his elementary school friends who also have had some issues with that girl...

This film actually came out a bit after Your name. which was just hitting the big time and a majority of people went to the movies just for that. For that reason, A Silent Voice had been eclipsed by the huge success of Your name even though the film was actually really good and was really important for everyone to see and understand what the real ‘friend’ is through this content. It is kinda natural for boys to make fun of girls who especially are newbies cos boys are really likely to get excited about them and tease to interact with girls. However, what the boy in this film was doing to the deaf girl was too far as some of his friends sometimes say to the bully. Although it must be hard for kids to understand how hard it is for disabled people to live as normal as other students and enjoy their own life as much as others, he was almost a grown-up and should’ve got to know about her condition, so have other students in my opinion. So I felt that these students in the 6th grade of elementary school were too childish. Despite that fact that the boy was bullying her too much, I really felt good to see him in high school visiting her school to apologise for what he did in childhood and to re-connect with her even if he knew that she, her sibling and mother didn’t forgive him at all. It was pretty interesting to see the cognition of these students who were kinda involved in bullying, though hard to say if one of the girls named Ueno, who enjoyed teasing the deaf girl with the boy, has become an adult as far as we see her behaviour...but felt really good when I saw these students reunite with each other after a few years have passed. Bullies especially in primary school usually get bullied after that due to excessive bullying that make others feel unpleasant and become really good men after understanding how harsh getting bullied and losing friends are. This kinda of thing also happens to that boy in particular in this film. Compared to Your name., A Silent Voice was much easier to watch but perhaps a bit harder to get feelings of characters mainly the deaf girl’s who smiles all the time no matter what happens to her. It’s been more than a year since these films came out and I hope A Silent Voice is gonna be recognised by as many people as Your name.

Thank you for reading my brief review of ‘A Silent Voice’!
