‘The Shape of Water’ was directed by Guillermo del Toro (known for directing Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim and etc which honestly, I didn’t really enjoy that much) and stars Sally Hawkins as a mute woman working as a janitor with her coworker (played by Octavia Spencer) in a hidden government laboratory in the 1960’s. One day, she comes across a big, mysterious creature living in a water tank, which was brought there from South Africa for a clandestine experiment. Because of her insatiable curiosity about the creature, she starts bonding a relationship with it by secretly feeding it and playing some music. However, knowing that it is to be killed soon, she makes an attempt to rescue the creature with a help from her friends...

As I mentioned above, I didn’t really enjoy most of his films like Pan’s Labyrinth or Pacific Rim despite that fact that Pan’s Labyrinth was actually good for lots of people. That’s why I was kinda wondering if this new one would really excite me as much as it did to others even though this film has been expected to win an Oscar for Best Picture this year, definitely will receive a nomination for it. However, I felt like I literally submerged myself into the story as soon as it started, feeling really comfortable as if my mother were reading me a picture book before I went to bed in my childhood. Then, the film expands in an unexpected and very exquisite way; The mysterious human-like creature appears, the mute lady gradually gets into that creature, then gradually falls in love with it, then things go awry. Although this sounds very usual and a bit cliched as long as I just introduce a bit of its scenario, this film is full of beauty in terms of everything such as the cinematography which was beautifully done, visual effects, make-ups especially for the creature played by Doug Jones and the last but not the least, great performances of each actor and actress. Despite that Sally Hawkins has a very few dialogues since she is playing a mute lady, she was doing really well even through her sign language particularly when communicating with the creature. These kind of things in this film were just beautiful. Never have I seen such a beautiful film with a creature before. I highly recommend seeing this film at the theatre on a big screen to everybody whether or not you enjoyed his previous works.
