The popularity of this show is built on the contrast between the cinematography/visuals and the plot. Much of it comes from the cast members and the makeup (visuals again).
The plot is just simply dark. Addiction, teen pregnancy, abusive relationships, etc. The list could go on and on. On the other hand, the cinematography almost glorifies these things, especially drug addiction. In the scenes when Rue is taking psychedelics. Colorful visual effects are used to mimic the high she experiences.
