Did I like this movie?- Well yes and no.
The story was cute and empowering but it looked too good to be true to me.
Also, I couldn’t really relate myself to Elle just because I am not White like her.
I totally understand that this movie holds this message that you should not be oppressed by the social norms in this world but should do whatever that your heart tells you to do - Elle is so symbolic about it in a sense that she is really critical about her White identity - yes I get that. But, you know what, dude, I am Asian; I am a minority person here in the United States. That’s why Elle looked too privileged to me and I couldn’t really relate myself to her: she has tons of money, she has awesome friends from sorority, she has socially approved “beauty” and everything. Well, she is going through hard times in this movie, yes I get that, but I feel like she is too privileged to complain about her life in the first place because of her social/cultural status.
I know, this is basically coming out of my jealousy. I need to pray. I need to ask God for help.
