Really painful film about a family dealing with trauma and how it can change the course of people’s lives. Centers around a young slightly troubled girl who doesn’t have the awareness or maturity to process the traumatic experience that occurs. The film adds whimsical elements that makes you realize that she is processing without her awareness of it that was heartbreaking to watch. I felt overwhelmed especially by the father who needed to deal with all the events. The main girl character was challenging to deal with, but it’s also not her fault. I left the movie feeling pretty emotionally drained but I enjoyed the contrast of the playful aspects despite the heavy subject matter. It was almost like a much more subtle Pan’s Labyrinth in terms of how kids process difficult situations.
