Combining phenomenal feat in visual effects with poignant narrative that serves as an intelligent allegory, War for the Planet of the Apes is a beautiful conclusion to the bafflingly underrated Caesar's trilogy. Contrast to most summer blockbuster, the film is brutal, bleak, and heart-wrenching and by all means it is not your typical shallow popcorn fun. Andy Serkis fully disappears and single-handedly cemented motion-capture as an effective medium of performance--one that elevates storytelling and pushes the boundary of filmmaking. It is about time the Academy recognizes this man's tremendous endeavor.
