【人生の教訓】
1914年夏のLondon。
かつて人気を博した喜劇役者Calveroは、同じアパートに住む若きバレリーナTerryの自殺を防ぎ、「妻」として自室に匿い療養させることに。
イギリスでは、1961年まで自殺は犯罪でした。
死に急ぐ若者を叱咤激励する一方で、自身の芸はもう時代遅れとなった現実に打ちのめされるCalvero。その名が仕事を呼び込むこともあれば、客足を遠のかせる要因になることも…。そしてプライドも邪魔をする。何事も他人の評価を避けることはできないでしょうが、直に素直な反応が返ってくるお笑いは厳しい世界ですね。
正直なところ、劇中で披露される芝居やお得意の千鳥足などを、笑えるほど面白いとは思えなかったです。しかし、サクラを仕込んだとは言え、Calveroに同情的なPostant氏には随分ウケていたようで…、名優の伝統芸を堪能するという趣意の方が合うかも知れません。(観客の中にも居ましたが、ナンパ目的？の婦人、あの2人の入れ替わりシーンは何だったのでしょう…🤔)
素顔のChaplinからは、一気に老けたような印象を受けました。本人はCalveroほど落ちぶれることはなかったにせよ、実際に肌で感じて来た変遷が台詞に反映されているようで、どうしても人物像が重なりました。これまでの作風ならCalveroが大道芸人となり、自然とくっついた若い2人を遠くから見守る終わり方になったでしょうか。バレエや音楽といった王道の芸術分野と壮大にコラボし、命懸けの引き継ぎを行うことで、自分は勇敢に人生に挑み続けたアーティストなのだ、喜劇も立派な芸術なのだと、作品を通して訴えていると感じました。
嘆くTerryに対しては、次世代の芸術家達への遺言とでも呼べるような数々の格言が放たれます。Chaplinからすれば、ヘタレが増えたように感じたのでしょうか😅生き方を諭して下さっており、少し勇気を頂きました。
CalveroはTerryとの年齢差にタジタジでしたが…、Chaplin自身の最後の妻は36歳下！でTerryのスタントとして登場しています。Neville役と、最初に登場する子供達は皆Chaplinの実子です。

“What do you want meaning for? Life is a desire, not a meaning. Desire is the theme of all life!”

“Then live without hope. Live for the moment. There are still….. wonderful moments.”

本当にそうだと思います。10代から修行したとしても、たかだか70年そこらでは、どんなことでも完璧に修得することは人間には不可能です。僅かながらでも常に不確実性を孕んでいるからです。何かを極めたと言う発言は、逆に極めていないことの証明だと思います。
