damn watched this all in a day! loved it! it's been a hot minute since I've been this engrossed and entertained all throughout watching a show! I think all the mysteries def helped me stay focused lol I was locked the fuck in trying to deduce how/why all the ppl died and stuff and having a blast!
i didn't know much about this going in other than that it's about the afterlife and has games and there's a random light yagami cameo! and yeah that was basically it (the light cameo was so short tho lol) but also so much more! i love how the story was told in a sort of anthology-type way that gradually adds context to the characters and worldbuilding. and such great use of flashbacks too! like even tho most of the ppl that go through the game only stay for like 2 eps it's amazing how well they flesh these characters out every time cuz I actually gave a shit about all of them! I like how varied the types of people were and the dynamic of random ppl being thrown together in this absurd scenario was just so damn fun to watch! esp liked the gyaru and idol combo with the endeavor lookin ass dude, the ep where they were playing twister was fucking hilarious lmao
oh haven't even gotten to the games part! yeah, what the hell is up with the games?! like I'm not complaining at all bc it was fucking hilarious seeing these ppl play air hockey and twister and old-school arcade games and bowling with their lives on the line (well not really since they're already dead lmao) and like the absurdity of the whole situation + the amazing sakuga in some scenes (like the air hockey scenes lol) + the plot and dialogue actually being really fucking interesting and sometimes weirdly insightful about the human condition was the perfect combo for me, like this was totally up my alley and I'm so glad I randomly decided to watch this today!
ooh I also love how decim grows to understand and feel human emotion through his interactions with chisato (was that her name lol I can't rember) and the reactions of the ppl in the death games and it felt so real yknow! like I can def imagine being put in a life or death situation brings out the ugliest parts of you and I really liked seeing how all the characters reacted to whatever stressors came their way and what desperation and fear and anger can lead to, plus the added layer of how someone who doesn't understand human emotion would judge that action and how a real person sees that same action. ugh I'm gushing way too much about this show lol it's like not perfect I feel (like not the most fleshed out world but also I'm not a huge lore person to begin with so it was aight for me) but goddamn do I love the ideas and themes in this!
also not that I was ever going to but that last part with chisato made me never want to commit suicide! like bruh that's so sad with her mom being like I'm sorry I couldn't tell what you were feeling before it was too late and then chisato seeing that but not being able to tell her it wasn't her fault bc she's dead and it's also not real ;-; and the whole thing with the storybook being a metaphor for communication and how ppl struggle to communicate what they feel and how we're fickle in that we say and do things we don't mean and sometimes we feel and think things but can't convey them to the ppl around us, and sometimes we do things that are "bad" but in the context of whatever situation you were in, it might have made sense... which then begs the question, how the fuck do you judge whether a person should go to heaven or hell? irl I think we just die and that's it, like poof, nothing, gone, but I do enjoy me a fun lil thought experiment! anyway I am just procrastinating going to sleep at this point it's 2 am urgh fuck work but free lunch tomorrow! yay!
edit two days later: her name was chifuyu not chisato lol also she reminded me of raven from teen titans a bit! like aesthetic wise! she was hot! and wtf I forgot to point out that decim looks like a robot gojo! lol bro is everywhere but his own manga! close enough welcome back gojo satoru! 🥲
