Ok, this is probably one of the strangest movies I have ever watched, but I really enjoyed it. Needs lots of digesting. My attempts to make sense of it using a linear storyline have all ended in failure. Despite this, there are many threads I found throughout - the motif of both the visual maze and the "circumstantial maze"...the footsteps and the broken shoes, the game of Nim and the games the film plays with the viewer, the game between the man and the woman. In the end, I think the movie is a conglomeration of recurring dreams, each version running into another and spawning another, accumulating, creating a Picasso-esque Cubist painting transformed into the medium of film. Whose recurring dreams? I don't know yet.
Putting this uncertainty aside - some of the shots in this movie were the most beautiful I have ever seen. The shot of Delphine walking in the wind, the shot against the balustrade... it is very visually engaging, and it certainly compensates for the disorienting and otherwise offputting storyline. I feel very privileged to have been able to see this movie.
