Samara on your smartphone!! Isn't is scary?? Not really. I don't know what their goal for this movie was.
It's not so much a horror movie as it is a mystery. What happened to Samara? Where did she come from?? These questions drive the movie with absolutely no scares in between.
The acting was horrible, the story was garbage. I couldn't recall a single moment that was frightening or unsettling.
I guess they wanted to make Rings into another series of movies, but the problem with horror franchises is that their iconic character can't be the hero. Whether it's Jason, Freddy, or Michael Myers. There always has to be a disposable human character that gets freaked out. We don't care about the humans!!
But we have to follow their boring story in order to get to the ghost or the monster. That's Rings. There's too much boring character drama and not enough Samara. Or scares.
