Human Nature
Cine Switch Ginza, a mini-theater set to close this October. I'd always wanted to go there at least once, so I went in with little more on my mind than, "Jazz in Ginza♪" 🎷
After the Congo gained independence, Patrice Lumumba became its first prime minister through the electoral process.🇨🇩 With his vision of genuine independence for the Congo and his support for the idea of a United States of Africa, he was deemed inconvenient for Western interests—and became a target for removal. 🚮
Jazz legend Louis Armstrong was sent from the U.S. to the Congo on a cultural exchange tour, while behind the scenes CIA agents were maneuvering to get rid of Lumumba—straight out of a spy movie.
Watching Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev deliver a fiery speech at the UN calling for an end to colonialism felt like something from a parallel universe. 🌌
The UN stood by as moves were made to remove Lumumba, and sure enough, Lumumba was gone. Eventually Mobutu, a dictator aligned with Western interests, came to power, corruption spread, and ordinary people suffered.
Human Nature, huh. Seems we've just been doing the same things over and over. I left the theater feeling thoroughly disgusted. 🤮 (The jazz playing throughout was wonderful, though, and the nostalgic theater itself—with its squeaky seats—had a lovely atmosphere. ✨️)
Soundtrack to a coup d'Etat
